As the Cape season switches from Hollywoodbets Durbanville to Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, it marks the end of the first quarter of 2024-25. All eyes this time last year were on Richard Fourie who had declared his intention to not only go for 300 winners in the season, but chase down Anthony Delpech’s “untouchable” 334-winner mark.
After what was a slow start, compared to the avalanche of winners that were to come, Fourie’s tally heading into last November was 70. This season, his win on Bluff On Bluff in what was the final race at Hollywoodbets Durbanville before the switch to Kenilworth, was his 49th of the season, a clear sign of how relentless the effort was in 2023/24.
Fourie’s 22 wins at Hollywoodbets Durbanville in the first three months of 2024/25 were still the most of any jockey as attention turns to Hollywoodbets Kenilworth this weekend. They came from 101 rides at a percentage of 21.8.
Two jockeys contributed to their connections earning over R1-million from winners in this period, one being Fourie (R2.1m) and the other Grant van Niekerk (R1.6m), who rode 16 winners at 18%.
When it came to trainers, Justin Snaith’s 31 winners and total stakes of R3.4m topped the list, ahead of Brett Crawford (17 winners and R2m in stakes). Adam Marcus (16.1) had the highest percentage of winners from trainers with five or more visits to the No1 box in the first quarter.
There were two horses who won three races at the course – Radicchio (trained by Piet Botha) and Be Merry (Snaith).
The most successful in terms of winners only, were:
