Philip Bamford won’t take exception to being called a swallow. It’s an affectionate term given to those living overseas who come to South Africa and spend the summer here. They then fly off back “home”. It’s the best of both worlds, and why not?
Bamford’s “home home” is in England, Lancashire, north-west to be clearer. OK, the city of Preston to be precise. However, his second “home” is South Africa, Cape Town to narrow that down as well.
His colours have been familiar in the No1 box over the years and while he has been an owner in England for over 30 years with the same silks, it’s only been since 2007 when he started coming to South Africa that he has raced in them in this country.
“I’ve had my colours for a long time, They are emerald green with red seams to the body, with a green gap, Quite simply, I chose them because they reminded me of the Gucci colours,” he says.
Bamford has horses in both the UK and South Africa, but his first runner in this country was Gold man, who was trained by Mike Bass. “He won four races.” Indeed he did. Gold Man actually won his maiden over 1000m under Jeff Lloyd in September 2007, before going on to score over 1800m, 2000m and 2400m, ridden by Robert Khati, Bernard Fayd’Herbe and Aldo Domeyer.
However, there were other good moments with the likes of Live Life. “I happened to be in the Bass box on my first visit to the races in South Africa and that day the stable cleaned up in the features, so it’s no wonder I am over every January. In terms of the ‘Gucci’ colours, I just think it’s a classy brand, associated with the best quality.”
