Racing is a numbers game but the only number that ultimately counted was the 377 achieved by Richard Fourie in his record-breaking 2023/24 season. The brilliant jockey also collected a R1-million incentive from Hollywoodbets to eclipse Anthony Delpech’s mark of 334 that had stood for 25 years.
Winner No 335 came at Hollywoodbets Greyville on 8th June aboard the Cape-trained DOUBLE GRAND SLAM and he went on to add another 43 winners to that total in an extraordinary season. He trampled over virtually every record in the book.
Here we take a look at some milestones behind his Western Cape campaign.
His first winner in the Cape was aboard ROD THE MOD for trainer Paul Reeves at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on 15th August 2023.
His last winner in the Cape was at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on 25th July – WALK WITH ME for trainer Glen Kotzen.
LION RAMPART was his singular most successful horse from the region, winning three times on the Vaughan Marshall-trained gelding.
He twice rode a hat-trick of winners in the region, at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on 2nd June and 25th June. He also rode five winners on the 2nd June card.
Fourie rode 20 winners for trainer Justin Snaith, the third most of any trainer. He had 109 with Alan Greeff and 28 with Sean Tarry (neither based in the Western Cape). He also rode 13 for Brett Crawford and Glen Kotzen.
He had winners for 18 different Western Cape trainers in total, headed by Snaith (28), Crawford and Kotzen (13), Vaughan Marshall (12) and the Harold Crawford/Michelle Rix stable (8).
Drakenstein Stud (32) was the Western Cape stud that provided the most winners from the region for him. That was the second most of any stud farm, with Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein (40) topping that list.
Fourie rode 66 winners at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, the second most of any course in the country. His national list was topped by the 69 winners on the Fairview Poly. He also won 24 races at Hollywoodbets Durbanville
One of his seven Grade 1 victories came in the Cape, with PRINCESS CALLA winning the City Of Cape Town Majorca Stakes at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on 27th January.
